米国の代表的辞書メリアム・ウェブスターに、性的なアイデンティティーを表す語としての「Aセクシュアル（"Asexual"）」が追加されたそうです。

「Aセクシュアル（"Asexual"）」という語はもともと「無性の」「無性生殖による」などの意の生物学用語。メリアム・ウェブスターでは、この語の項目に、新たに以下のような表記を付け加えたんです。（以下、Asexual | Definition of Asexual by Merriam-Websterより引用）

形容詞だけでなく名詞としての用法も載っているし、これならかなりわかりやすいのでは。ちなみにAセクシュアルの公的認知やAセクシュアルのコミュニティ育成などに取り組んでいる団体、「Aセクシュアルの可視性と教育ネットワーク（The Asexual Visibility and Education Network）」は、この改訂についてFacebookで「やった！（"We did it!"）」と喜びの声をあげています。
元記事を読んでいて思い出したのが、オーストラリアで43年間連れ添っていて、44周年に結婚する予定のレズビアンカップルのジョージア・カー（Georgia Carr, 64）さんとスーザン・マクファーレン（Susan MacFarlane, 66）がDaily Mailの取材で話していたこと。ふたりは1974年に恋に落ちたとき「レズビアン」という単語を聞いたことすらなく、自分たちは「混乱している」のだと思っていたそうです。学校はレズビアンについて教えてくれず、メディアが描写するのも異性愛者だけだったため、彼女らは「あらゆる意味で手探り」しなければならなかったとのこと。名乗るべき名を奪われているというのはこのように人生の時間と労力を無駄に消耗させるものなので、今回のメリアム・ウェブスターのような動きは大切だと改めて思いました。
